V-Reds Add Three Impact Players

Today UNB announced three impressive recruits will be joining the team this fall. First up is Tri-Cities Americans forward Taylor Procyshen, who spent his 4-year WHL career in Tri-Cities, and was named captain of the team for the 2008-09 season.

In addition to being a dynamic offensive player, Taylor brings some WHL hardware with him to UNB. This past season, he was awarded the Doug Wickenheiser Trophy as the WHL’s “Humanitarian of the Year” for his charitable efforts in the Tri-Cities community. He should provide another positive influence in the UNB dressing room.

Also joining UNB is former Edmonton Oil Kings forward Jeff Lee. The big winger had a great year in Edmonton by leading his team in scoring, and helping guide the Oil Kings to their first playoff appearance since returning to the WHL. Lee is the second former Oil Kings captain to be recruited to UNB. Defenceman Bretton Stamler also wore the “C” for Edmonton.

This past spring, the Edmonton Oilers’ AHL affiliate in Springfield signed Lee to an amateur tryout. Lee also recently attended the Oilers’ summer camp. His combination of size, skill, and character should be a big addition to the V-Reds’ forward lines.

Finally, joining newcomer Ben Shutron on the blueline will be Lethbridge Hurricanes team captain, Ben Wright. Wright played for Lethbridge of the WHL, and was a 4th round draft pick of the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2006. He is capable of playing in all situations, demonstrated some offence capability during his WHL career, and brings more leadership to the V-Reds. Expect him to be a stabilizing presence on the UNB blueline.

These are excellent pick-ups by Coach MacDougall. We are very excited to have Taylor, Jeff, and Ben at UNB and look forward to seeing them on the ice this fall.

Also, thanks to “Drummer” for letting us know that the final slab was poured on the Aitken Centre floor this week. Sounds like things are progressing nicely. The official V-Reds website has added some more photos of the renovations, which you can find here.

Ok - two forwards and a D-man plus a D-man announced in July. What more do we need? The forwards replace Henderson and Pearce (as bodies go). Ben W. and Ben S. replaces Dustin and Dacosta. Add Daine Todd to replace Cuddihy and the forwards are covered. I think we only need another D-man for depth?

In terms of absolute needs, probably just one depth d-man. UNB has 7 now if you count Aldred and Hepditch (who both played well there during the playoffs and at Nationals).

As a luxury, I wouldn't mind seeing a bit more added up front, maybe a role-player a la Justin McCutcheon. Also, secondary scoring was at times a bit of a "problem" by UNB standards last year - not as consistent as we'd all like I guess. Remember last fall we lost a lot of forwards early - Todd, Dickson, Bailey, Clendenning all went down. Remarkable that a team could absorb all that and still do well, but I wonder if Coach MacDougall felt a little exposed and might try to protect against that? As Tremblay's injury at Nationals demonstrated, you can never have too much scoring depth at the forward position.

I'd be curious to know how the off-season training is going for some of the returning players, especially the 2nd year guys who would be going through their first full off-season program with Ken Seaman. Seems every year there's 1 or 2 remarkable stories of pounds added or shed as needed.

When speaking on defenseman lets not forget Spencer Corcoran, who was leaked in the Media by the President of the MJAHL. Apparently he hits like a mack truck (Craig Perry. He scored 67 pts last year with Summerside and had 295 PIMS. Gardiner stated that there were 8 new recruits coming in. They have announced 4 plus Corcoran makes 5. I think the other 3 recruits that are rumored to be coming will all be forwards..

What about Chris Culligan, who played last year with Cape Breton? I heard he was rumoured to be coming...anyone have any more info on that?

A minor thing but one thing I wish they would do at the AUC is hang all of the banners in some kind of organized way...they way they have it set up now looks messy with them hanging off a bunch of different beams...and I think there may be some missing to but I'm not too sure on that. It would be nice to see them all lined up by year or something...
