UNB Re-Signs Coach Gardiner MacDougall

Anyone who happened to listen to the local radio on the drive home this afternoon probably caught that Coach Gardiner MacDougall has been locked-up for another five years at UNB.

What else can be said? Coach MacDougall has led the program through its most successful period. Along the way "Coach Mac" has picked up two AUS Coach of the Year awards, three AUS Championships, a Gold Medal from the 2007 World University Games, and two National Championships. We look forward to having him back at UNB to add to that total. Congrats to Coach MacDougall.

Update: Here's the press release on the official CIS website.

I don't think you can ever say enough about Gardiner. He is always looking to make things better and never rests on his past accomplishments. The program could not be in better hands. I think we can expect see another, if not a few, more titles under him (especailly since we host in 2011 and 2012). 2013 us the next time the AUS goes to FISU, I think we can expect to see Gartiner take the reins for that team.

I couldn't agree more. IMO, Coach Mac is the best thing to ever happen to UNB's mens hockey program.

Gardiner's ability is motivating people to get involved is his greatest asset when it comes to building a program. He brings in good players and good people and they find a way to win. But it's the local support group that allows him to focus on what he knows best: getting the most out of his hockey players. UNB did a good job in locking up MacDougall for 5 more years. Considering his age (49), maybe he recognizes the grass isn't always greener elsewhere. Good for him.
