V-Reds Host Brock Badgers

This weekend the Varsity Reds will host Brock Badgers for a pair of games at the new and improved Aitken University Centre.

UNB has some history with the Badgers. In 2007-2008, the two teams played twice. First, UNB took the an exhibition game at Brock's Steel Blade Tournament by a score of 5-1. Then, as fate would have it, the two teams would meet in game 1 at CIS Nationals in Moncton. UNB went on to win that contest 6-1. Brock is coached by none other than former V-Reds captain, Murray Nystrom, who turned down the coaching job at UNB back in 2000, opening the door for one Gardiner MacDougall...

Brock has added a few familiar faces from the region to their roster this year. including Mark Yetman, former starting goalie of the Halifax Mooseheads, and goalie Jordan Bent from the Woodstock Slammers.

A few other Badgers to watch out for include last year's points leaders Derek Brochu (7g, 9a, 19 pts) and Gary Friesen (5g, 11a, 16 pts).

Last season Brock finished 3rd in the OUA's Mid West Division at 9-14-5 for 23 pts, which left they shy of a playoff birth. Two seasons ago the Badgers were the OUA runners-up.

Game time for both nights is 7 PM.

Also, Bill Hunt catches up with Murray Nystrom in today's Daily Gleaner.

I might also add that former StFX coach Danny Flynn's son Brad plays for Brock. I saw him play junior in New Glasgow with the Crushers ... a scrappy competitor with unfortunately not a lot of skill around the net.

It will be interesting to see if Brock still plays the trap as they did two years ago ...
