Catamounts Should Be Tough

UNB won't find it any easier this afternoon when they take on the UVM Catamounts on less than a day's rest since the start of their last game.  The Catamounts were ranked #3 in the final USA Today/USA Hockey poll last season, and just take a look at the size of the players on their roster

A quick visit to UVM's Hockey webpage reveals that they are returning all 6 of their top defencemen, and starting goalies from last year, as well as the better part of their forwards.

According to ReDSea, the teams met before back in December of 1998, where the Catamounts won by a score of 5-2.  Here's a chance to even that score.

If Coach MacDougall's trend of alternating goalies continues, we expect Derek Yeomans to get the nod today.

Game time is 5 PM.  The game will be available from UNBHockey on Twitter, or on Radio, Video ($7 USD) or Game Tracker from UVM Athletics.

IMO the key to the game will be the first period...like UMass this is Vermonts first game so if UNB can get off to a quick start like they did last night and take advantage of UVM's rustiness they may have a good chance...it seemed that UMass really started to come on in the final two periods last night once they started to get their legs back

I was at the '98 game. We had also won the CIAU Gold the year earlier.

In '98, they played UVM as the last game of the first half (they played Princton and Brown at the beginning of the season - Dave was at those games) - so both teams were well played by then.

That UVM team was small, but fast with two Swede's on the point. UNB was not ready for their speed. Either Dax or Jeff were ejected in the first period with a checking-from-behind which made it tough for the rest of the game.

The team bused the entire 9 hours that day to play to save on hotel cost - probably another factor.

Only once has UNB won 2 games in the US in any season - 07/08: they split the pre-season against UNH(W 4-3) and UML (L 3-5) and a mid-season win over Maine, in Orono, (2-1).

They have have never won their two pre-season games in the US (in the modern era - they did play some games back in the 50s they might have won - still working on those records).

Does anyone know whether Jeff Lee has played with the Reds yet?

He wasn't on the roster for either game this weekend. We'll probably learn more throughout the week.

I assume that he is still with the team?
