UNB 4 – StFX 3 (OT)

It took overtime, but the first place University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds hockey team earned their seventh win in a row despite a valiant effort by StFX netminder Bryan Gillis and some opportunistic goals by his teammates in Antigonish.

UNB came out flying, and Bryan Gillis (Lantz, NS) kept StFX in early in the game until the X-Men got their legs under them. However, it was StFX scoring first, when rookie Ryan Sparling (Sydney, NS) managed to slip by rookie UNB defenceman Ben Shutron (Orleans, ON) along the boards and get a hard shot on net, and the big rebound off of UNB goalie Travis Fullerton (Riverview, NB) went right to Chris Hulit (Sault Ste Marie, ON) who one-timed the puck into the top corner at 14:02.  That was the only goal in the period that saw the X-Men close the early shot deficit to 11-10.

In the second period, Brennen Wray (Moose Jaw, SK) caught a bit of a break when his shot dribbled off Fullerton's right pad and into the far corner of the net at 3:04. As the period wore on, UNB's puck pressure caused the X-Men to start taking penalties. At 13:30  Hunter Tremblay (Timmins, ON) got UNB on the scoreboard on the power play, and with their next man advantage Kyle Bailey (Ponoka, AB) was in his wheel house in the slot when he one-timed a blast past Gillis to tie the game at 15:19.  In the second period, UNB outshot StFX 14-8.

Early in the third period, UNB was carrying the play when Gillis managed to outrace two V-Reds to a loose puck in the X-Men zone and in the scramble afterwards the X-Men ended up with an odd man rush back the other way lead by defenceman Josh Day who got a shot on net and Brett Morrison (Howie Center, NS) jumped on the rebound for the goal at 2:16 to put the X-Men back in front.  UNB kept attacking, and StFX looked to be content to protect their lead.  Finally, at 15:34, on UNB's 41st shot of the game (according to the shot clock), defenceman Luke Gallant let a quick point shot go through a crowd that beat Gillis to tie it up once again.  UNB had a couple of more chances in the period, but the game stayed tied at the end of regulation time.

In the four-on-four overtime it was all UNB pressure, and then Shutron pinched in from the blue line to beat an X-Man to a loose puck, got the puck back to fellow d-man Alex Aldred (St. Albert, AB) on the point, who then put a quick wrister on net that handcuffed Gillis for the winner 74 seconds into extra time.

The final shots on the game sheet favoured UNB 41-23 in the 4-3 overtime victory.  UNB was 2-for-6 on the power play while StFX was 0-for-4 with the man advantage.  The X-Men did edge the V-Reds 37-33 in faceoff wins.
