Pete Kelly Cup Game 2 - STU 3 - Toronto 2

Wednesday afternoon in the consolation final of the 2009 Peterbilt NB Pete Kelly Cup,
the hometown St. Thomas Tommies defeated the University of Toronto Varsity Blues 3-2.
It was a rare "home game" for the Tommies at UNB's Aitken University Centre and a
spirited match by both teams coming off losses the day before.

In the first period the Tommies went 0-for-3 on the power play, but couldn't get the
puck past UofT goalie Andrew Martin (Mississauga, ON). Both teams had scoring chances,
but nothing to show for it. The Varsity Blues outshot the Tommies 11-7 in the first

Midway through the second period Toronto was on the power play when STU netminder Ben
MacFarlane (Woodstock, NB) made the first sprawling save, but he was down and out when
Kyle Paige (Richmond Hill, ON) put in the rebound. STU evened the score just under two
minutes later when Tyler Dietrich (Vancouver, BC) passed the puck from behind the net
to Mike Reich (Craik, SK) at the side of the post who banged it in for the goal.
Forty-five seconds later Kenton Dulle (Craik, SK) scored from in close to give the
Tommies the lead. At 15:09 the Tommies were shorthanded when Mike Eagles (Fredericton,
NB) carried the puck into the Toronto zone, passed across the front of the UofT net,
and Alex Labonte (St-Majorique, QC) knocked the puck out of the air and past a
surprised Martin. Toronto had 8 shots in the period while the Tommies scored three
times on 6 shots.

The third period had a bit more of an edge to it as both teams looked for the win and at
5:23 Varsity Blues defenceman Andrew Kizito (Toronto, ON) broke down the left side of
the ice on the rush and beat MacFarlane low on the short side with a quick release.
That was as close as the visitors could come, as Claudio Cowdry (Mississauga, ON) made
it difficult for his teammates as he was assessed a double-minor for spearing STU's
Jason Cassidy (Toronto, ON) at 17:31. STU held on for the 3-2 win, outshooting Toronto
10-7 in the final frame while being outshot 26-23 in the game. STU was 0-for-7 on the
power play in the game while Toronto was 1-for-3. The Summit Dodge players of the game
were Matt Eagles for the Tommies and Andrew Kizito for the Varsity Blues.

HA HA, got a kick out of this.
"At 15:09 the Tommies were shorthanded when Mike Eagles (Fredericton,NB)"

He came off the bench to help out a bit.

Almost as good as UNB's program at the Pete Kelly Cup. "Happy New Years from the Varsity Reds" Must have had a BRSS student doing those things up. HA HA

Seriously though, happy NEW YEAR to my Squirrel buddies KC, PK, MJ, TD, SW, and SC. May your cup over flow with acorns and championships.
