UNB Men's Hockey Awards Dinner

The V-Reds held their annual awards dinner Tuesday night and we have a few highlights to pass along.  The evening began with Coach MacDougall addressing those in attendance.  He mentioned how Fredericton is the only city in Canada where it's front page of the newspaper if the University hockey team loses. We'll take it to mean that it just shows people care, which is a good thing.

The winners of the team awards were as follows:

Hardest worker - Kyle Bailey
Most Improved - Dion Campbell
Top Hitter - Jonathan Harty
Top Defensive Forward - John Scott Dickson
Top Efficiency - Hunter Tremblay
Top D-Man - Luke Gallant

Later, the focus shifted to assitant coach Lucas Madill, who is graduating and moving on from UNB after playing and coaching the past 3 seasons, and following that, John Scott Dickson addressed the crowd.  Like most players, Dickson came to UNB expecting to win, and though things didn't work out this year, Dickson leaves UNB a two-time CIS champion. The crowd paid their respects with a standing ovation. Dickson is the only graduating player, a record low amount that reflects just how young this UNB team was.

I unfortunately could not make it, can you elaborate more on what JSD had to say. I will definitely miss watching him play; He would be on my top V-Reds team of all time for sure.

Dicks gave what he called "a bit of a downer speech" -- he apologized, but said, "you expect to win at UNB, and there's not a lot of hardware up here on the stage". He also said that he didn't think he played his best hockey when he had to and he felt bad for that -- typical honesty from Dickson.

He did go on to thank just about everyone connected to the program ... that took a while.

The one positive J-S brought up was to remember that no one can take away their record season, unless they go 28-0 next season ...

But for most everyone there is was a bittersweet night - with lots of mention of the 27 wins, but no hooping and hollaring, even when the Andrew's year-in-review video was shown.

I hope Gardiner stays after the next couple years but i cant see it..............hes too good of a coach to be stuck at this level.

Obviously you missed the 5 year contract he signed last year...

I beleive his current 5-yr extension has him at UNB until 2013/14. The next two years we host Nationals and the 2012/13 season marks the AUS's turn at WUG (which you have to expect Gardiner to be the headcoach this time).

Now this doesn't exlude the chance that he takes a leave from UNB (like Mike Johnston did).

Questions about the coach said...

No question Gardiner is an excellence recruiter who has done wonders developing the UNB program. But really, how good a coach is he when you consider some of his on-ice moves. Losing to St. FX four straight games including three in a row in the playoff round. His usage of players leaves a lot of people befuddled, and his tendency to shorten his bench even with all the talent he has on hand needs to be questioned. I know there are several players who don't know if they're coming or going when it comes to tryng to read MacDougall and earn playing time. It's been suggested MacDougall has a tendency to categorize his players by what he feels they can and cannot do regardless of how well the player might be performing at the time. In other words, MacDougall has a tendency to make up his mind about a certain player and rarely deviates from his line of thinking even though the player might prove to be something different in the long run.

Gardy is one of very best at recruiting and networking/marketing, essential in CIS hockey.

While I personally don't consider him an elite coach (but who am I to really say, I am just a fan), his track record is impressive and players respect him and play hard for him....hard to argue with success!

UNB will only benefit from him staying involved with the program the next few years.
