Grypons Arrive At UNB On A Positive Note

The Daily Gleaner's Bill Hunt previews the Guelph Gryphons and notes that they arrive in town on their own 3-game win streak, outscoring Brock and Laurier by a combined margin of a 13-2 along the way.  Guelph is expected be competitor in the OUA this season after a 14-10-4 and dropping the semi-final decision to Lakehead in the playoffs.

A quick check over at the ReDSea reveals that the last time UNB played Guelph, they lost 4-3 at Maple Leaf Gardens in the Gold Medal Game back in 1997, a game some of us remember too well, when yet another star goalie stood on his head and stole the win.  There's not nearly as much at stake, and the players are all different but let's hope UNB can extract some overdue revenge and keep the momentum going in the pre-season.

Thanks for bringing back those bad memories from that game at Maple Leaf Gardens, where we were hoping for glory after upsetting Alberta. A bit of a slow start for UNB, Dax (I believe) getting 10 minutes for wearing his visor too high, and that frickin' little goalie for Guelph standing on his head all game. I've now got that game on DVD, dubbed from a VHS tape that Eric made from the TSN broadcast, if anyone wants to relive it ...

Heartbreaking loss, I believe the goalies Last name was Mullin wasn't it. And our Leading scorer that season Bill Wright was ejected for Checking from behind early in the first period.

1997, 2004, and 2008 were years I thought we should have won the Gold medal game but something got in the way

Not related to this game, but former V-Red Daryl Boyce is expected to be in the Leafs lineup in their preseason game against the Senators tonight. Game will be on TSN.
