Reds Cut Down Axemen With 5-2 Win

Over 2200 fans at the Aitken Centre were treated to a pretty good hockey game this evening that ended with the good guys skating to a 5-2 victory over the Acadia Axemen.  Scoring for UNB were Dion Campbell, Hunter Tremblay, Nick MacNeil, Luke Gallant, and Ryan Seymour.  Travis Fullerton made 18 saves for the win.   The final shot count was 35-20 in favour of the Varsity Reds. Luke Gallant was strong on the blue line setting the physical tone of the game early in the first with a few big hits.

The game was 3-2 until a power-play goal late in the third period.  The Axemen deserve credit for playing a tight defensive game while capitalizing on a few scoring opportunities to keep this one close.

UNB will be back at it next Friday night at home when they try to extract some revenge against the UPEI Panthers.

Solid game for UNB. As a UNB game, I gotta say wow about the first acadia goal...roof job off the cross bar from sliding accross the ice on your butt...well done...overall solid game by UNB.

I noticed Acadia doesn't have any 5th year players...combine that with the fact they haven't beat UNB since the 06/07 season and that means no one on Acadia has ever won a game against UNB. 17 games and counting...

Between STU and Acadia that is 16 points a year coming from guaranteed win night. Acadia may break that this year, not much to worry about from STU though.

The same could be said about DAL, there are only four 5th year players and only two were with the team in '06/07 when they last beat UNB - the goalies; Disher and Wall. Wall got the win in that game 4-3 at the AUC. UNB has outscored them 71 to 20 for a GAA of 5.5 vs 1.5.

So, an easy 12 wins for 24 points, but it's how you do against the top 1/2 that matters - on Acadia has the talent to win games against the top 1/2 - the rest everyone defeats.
