V-Reds Finish Pre-Season With Win Over RPI

A 4-1 win over RPI leaves the Varsity Reds with a perfect 8-0 record in the pre-season.  Scoring for UNB were Hunter Tremblay with two  (including his first a mere 7 seconds into the game), Jordan Clendenning, and Chris Culligan with a short-handed goal.  Travis Fullerton made 25 saves in net for UNB.  Shots on goal favoured UNB 31-26.  According to the live stats, Josh Kidd returned to the lineup.

Pre-season wins are nice, but nobody is getting too excited just yet.  The V-Reds will put this pre-season behind them and prepare for games that matter starting on Friday, October 15 at UPEI.

Have some thoughts on what you've seen from UNB so far?  Let us know in the comments.

Thoughts on what I see....

I understand points wise the games don't matter and I understand what happened at the end of last year. But here's the facts...there's nothing we can about last year except fix it this year.

So far I see a confident team, a very talented team and a team that deserves praise for an outstanding job in the pre-season.

Congrats to all the V-Reds for an outstanding job. I will be glued to hopefully a UPEI webcast on Oct 15.

Good Job guys, look forward to having you back home again!!

I purchased the video feed and I'm certain that the person who the announcers were calling Kidd was actually Steve Pearce.

Didn't see Fillier listed in the box score...wonder why he didn't play?

Last year X said; 'fine, let UNB run around the boards and take shots from far out and we'll just wait for a chance'. Does UNB have a plan to play different styles depending on their opponent's strategy?

Attended both games in Calgary, what a talented team never stopped skating, congrats to the V-Reds for two great games.

I was there tonight at RPI, nice arena, do NOT like the fans...

that said, UNB is icing a very well put together team. They embarrassed RPI tonight, and the shot clock said 31-26, but in reality, RPI had a lot less shots on, they counted wide shots and shots blocked by UNBs defensemen.

UNB plays a very well put together game, and I was very impressed for my first time watching the Varsity Reds.

After the game, I got Nick Layton to sign my Fog Devils jersey, so that was an added plus, but I was disappointed that Matt Fillier didn't play.

Nevertheless, it was a GREAT showing by UNB.

Would it be possible for someone in the know to break down the recent roster changes. Like who is on the DL, who these new names are that I see people mention once in a while, etc. A Fin? Somebody's younger brother?

- Carl

Sure Carl.

-Steve Pearce is indeed a "playing" assistant coach. He's in 3rd year law. The plan was that he would be an assistant coach on the bench this year, and could dress and use his last year of eligibility when needed ... which was the case on the US roadtrip.
He of course is Rob's twin brother, and played 4 years at McGill before coming to UNB.
- Number switches coming for regular season. Pearce will take #3. Harty will switch to #40. MacNeil will take #12.
- The mystery Finn. It is Matias Keränen. http://eliteprospects.com/player.php?player=9542. He is doing his MBA I guess. He will be in eligibility year #4 as he's placed Finnish 2nd Division pro. Already has a degree earned in Finland. Has (had?) a injury, so not on roster yet, but will be soon.
- DL would be Ben Shutron (gone for season), Ben Wright (gone til Christmas), Taylor Prosychen (not publicly known, concussion again maybe?), Josh Kidd (not known what injury is).

Kidd was on the ice for the RPI game... or someone in his jersey anyways....

Prosychen still having some headaches...so hard to say when he'll return to full time duty.

Steve Pearce was wearing Josh Kidd's jersey in the RPI game. Kidd as in the stands.
