First Top Ten of 2011: UNB is #1!

With the beginning of the second term, the CIS has released the ninth Top Ten of the 2010-2011 season, with UNB moving into the #1 spot. SMU moves up to #4, while UPEI remains at #6. UNB's two shutout wins over the weekend, coupled with a 7-1 victory over McGill during the Christmas break, was surely a big part of the reason why UNB has taken over the top spot with 12 first place votes.

Here's how the rankings look in the ninth media poll.

(regular season record) / votes (first-plae votes) / (previous rankings)

1. UNB (13-4-0) / 171 pts (12) / (2)
2. Alberta (12-2-2) / 163 (4) / (1)
3. McGill (18-0-2) / 138 (2) / (3)
4. Saint Mary's (12-4-1) / 125 / (5)
5. Western Ontario (14-1-3) / 109 / (4)
6. UPEI (10-5-2) / 68 / (6)
7. Saskatchewan (10-6-0) / 67 / (8)
8. Lakehead (13-4-1) / 52 / (7)
9. Manitoba (7-3-4) / 38 / (9)
10. UQTR (13-5-0) / 24 / (10)

Other teams receiving votes: StFX (14), Calgary (10), Wilfrid Laurier (6), Nipissing (3), Carleton (1), Guelph (1).

I think a lot of little factors were at play this week. ALB lost to UBC, McGill's tough road trip to the AUS, McGill win over UO in OT, UWO lost to LAU, UNB winning both games in a shutout, SMU getting two wins.

The scariest stat - UNB's 27 GAA in 17 games. That's insanely low.

Looking at records alone; McGill should be first and UWO, LKD and UQTR should be a lot higher. It goes to show you how weak the voters believe the OUA is.

It will be interesting to see the results while the OUA all-star team is at WUG'11.

27 goals in 17 games is scary

thats only 21 goals againts in 16 Games

The sad part is that McGill still got two first-place votes, after getting hammered by UNB 7-1, and all of the voters were privy to that information in their pre-vote e-mail.
