The UPEI Panthers proved to be stiff competition again, but Varsity Reds were able to leave UPEI with a 3-1 win thanks to solid penalty killing and timely scoring. Hunter Tremblay opened the scoring in the first period with a power-play goal, and Kyle Bailey made it 2-0 before the first period was over. UPEI, got one back in the second period, but that would be as close as they would get. Tremblay added an empty-net goal with seconds left in the game to leave the score at 3-1 for the good guys.
Mark Guggenberger was stingy in net for the Panthers again. Shots on goal were 35-20 UNB. The story in this game might very well be the special teams. UNB went 1-for-3 on the power-play while UPEI was held to just 6 shots on 6 power-plays and couldn't convert on any of their chances. Travis Fullerton made the start and was great at times putting up 19 saves for the win.
The V-Reds now have a 9 point lead on both SMU and STFX who are tied for 2nd in the AUS. With that lead, and just 4 games remaining for both SMU and STFX, UNB has clinched 1st place in the AUS and will have home-ice advantage throughout the playoffs.

Hmmm...5 goals for Trembley in 2 games this weekend. Sounds like CIS player of the week to me.
