Jeffrey Memorial Game To Be In The Pink

FREDERICTON - The UNB Varsity Reds hockey team will partner with the basketball and volleyball teams to make the annual Mark Jeffrey game on February 9th a fundraiser for Breast Cancer research. The hockey program has developed several different initiatives for the annual  game between the V-Reds and the STU Tommies at 7:00pm in the Aitken Centre.

The Mark Jeffrey game typically raises money for the V-Reds scholarship fund and is the only regular season game not included in season ticket packages. This year tickets for the game cost $5 – however, should fans wish to pay the regular game rate of $10 the additional $5 fee will all go to raise funds for the “Cause”.

Ten dollar tickets are also being sold in the three Fredericton High Schools (Fredericton High, Leo Hayes and Ecoles Sainte-Anne) through the Canadian Cancer Society Youth Organization.

Along with members of the Jeffrey family, several cancer survivors will be honoured in the pre-game ceremony. The Varsity Reds will also unveil their new video screens located on the west wall of the Aitken Centre. The cancer survivors’ testimonials will be shown on the screens throughout the evening. The new video screens are ‘legacy items’ installed for the upcoming CIS men’s hockey championship hosted by UNB at the Aitken Centre.

“We did the same thing for the 2003 hockey nationals when we installed the score clock over centre ice,” said Maureen Sparks, championship coordinator. “A legacy item is a new piece of equipment or feature that leaves a lasting benefit to the Varsity Reds athletics program, beyond the actual event itself.”

The Varsity Reds will also be changing their colours – but only for this one special night. The team will wear pink jerseys as part of the ‘Pink in the Rink’ promotion. Members of the Canadian Cancer Society Youth Organization will be selling tickets to win the jerseys. Fans are encouraged to also wear pink in the rink to show their support for this worthy cause.

In addition to the initiatives inside the rink there will be a $2 voluntary parking fee at the Aitken Centre and Chapman Field parking lots - all proceeds will go to Breast Cancer research. The Varsity Reds soccer program will help manage parking arrangements to assist with the weekend commitment of raising funds for the “Cure”.

“Our UNB men’s hockey team, in support of our other varsity teams, are proud to partake in UNB’s first ever ‘Pink in the Rink event in conjunction with our 20th anniversary of the Mark Jeffrey Memorial Game- our most important regular season game. Our organizing committee, under the guidance of Roger Shannon, has put together a very special night that is sure to honour our proud tradition of Mark Jeffery along with “making a significant difference” in raising awareness and funds for cancer research,” commented head coach Gardiner MacDougall.

Well I double-checked. No auction Wednesday night. Despite what may have been said earlier, UNB will be drawing for around 20 pink jerseys, so make sure you buy one of those 50/50 tickets.
