V-Reds Hold On For 2-1 Win At STFX

Some big saves by Derek Yeomans late in the game helped UNB hold on to a 2-1 victory in Antigonish against the STFX X-Men.

Kyle Bailey fed Lachlan MacIntosh to open the scoring in the first minute of play, and Nick MacNeil added the other UNB goal later in the first period.  Derek Yeomans had to be sharp, particularly in the last couple of minutes when a few iffy calls irked the UNB coaching staff and resulted in a couple of 5-on-3 power plays (and even a 6-on-3 for the last 20 seconds) for the bad guys.  STFX converted on one opportunity but Yeomans closed the door the rest of the way.

The win leaves UNB with a 20-4 record, good for 40 points. The V-Reds continue their road trip in Nova Scotia tomorrow night in Halifax against the SMU Huskies.

Quite simply, not good officiating in this game, especially in the closing minutes.

Referring to the officiating as "iffy" is being very generous. It was honestly brutal in the second and third period and in the last 5 minutes especially. A 5 on 3 power play from 2 real borderline calls produced a goal after about 20 seconds but took only 3 seconds off the clock. The referee very reluctantly finally took off 5 or 6 seconds.

The only consistency in the calls was UNB being a man short after every scrum.

The take charge referee gave Josh Day a 2 minute penalty for a scary two hander across Hunter Tremblay's arm in the 3rd period. 5 minutes for attempt to injure plus a game would have been more appropriate.
