The V-Reds' playoff run begins, TONIGHT!!

It has been a long wait for V-Reds fans, but finally the wait is over as the V-Reds host the Acadia Axemen tonight at 7pm at the AUC for game one of the second round of the playoffs.

The V-Reds (23-5-0) had a first round by while the Axemen (14-11-3) made quick work of the UPEI Panthers (14-11-3) in the first round, shutting them out in two straight games by the score of 1-0 each time.

The last playoff meeting between these two teams was on March 5th, 2009 in a game that saw the V-Reds come from behind for a 3-2 OT win, thanks to third period and overtime goals by Jonathon Harty. This is the 11th playoff meeting between these two teams since the 1983-84 season. The V-Reds have won six of those playoff series, while the Axemen claimed the other four. Three of the V-Reds AUAA/AUS titles have come by beating the Axemen in the AUS finals, and UNB won their first CIAU/CIS title by beating the Axemen in the gold medal game in Saskatoon in the 1997-98 season.

Kristofer Westblom was a wall in the first round, shutting the Panthers out two games in a row, stopping all 56 shots he faced. The Axemen’s defense only allowed 10 shots on the 13 PP opportunities that the Panthers had. Scott Tregunna scored both Axemen goals in the first round.

Both Travis Fullerton and Derek Yeomans have had fantastic years between the pipes. Both goaltenders have had shutouts against the Axemen this season, and combined to tie the record of six shutouts in one season by an AUS team. Hunter Tremblay is now the undisputed points leader is V-Reds history in both the regular season (201) and career (216) record books.

Tonight's game can be viewed as a webcast on the SSN network, listened to on CHSR radio, and followed on UNBHockey on Twitter.
