2011 National Champions!

Mission accomplished!!!

The Varsity Reds thrilled the hometown crowd by defeating the McGill Redmen 4-0 to capture their 4th CIS National Championship.  Scoring for UNB were Luke Gallant with the game winner, Daine Todd with a pair, and Matt Fillier.   This team's strength was total commitment to 2-way play.  The V-Reds defenders did an excellent job at keeping a high-skilled, dangerous Redmen offence to firing shots from the perimeter and limited rebound. Travis Fullerton did what he does best and posted another shut-out, his second of the tournament.   Shots on goal were 27-28 in favour of the Redmen.

Tournament MVP went to Luke Gallant, tournament all-stars went to Travis Fullerton, Luke Gallant, Jonathan Harty, Kyle Bailey, and Chris Culligan.  McGill's Maxime Langelier-Parent also received all-star honours.

For V-Reds fans, this was the perfect ending to a terrific year, and erases the memory of last year's painful defeat.  V-Reds fans deserve a pat on the back for making the atmosphere in the Aitken Centre incredible all weekend.

Picking up that Luke Gallant gameworn is looking like one of the best decisions I've made. ;)

Maybe I'm too intoxicated from celebrating, but the Aitken Centre and this team are magic, everyhing surrounding the team, the stories, the successes.. I loove it all.

Fully played the game of his life... make that the week-end of his life. Props to Gallant and MacIntosh too (and whoever else might be gone next year). Sad to see you go, but glad I got to see you play.

UNB just put on an incredible show, proud to call this school my home(for the next couple of years anyway)

See you next year boys! I can't wait!

Great teamwork for the entire UNB group, and that includes the support this site gives the team and all fans who bleed UNB red such wonderful insight. You guys do a great job. And just want to publicly thank Mark Kilfoil and the support team at CHSR-FM 97.9 for making our involvement so very enjoyable. It's great to be able to cover a winning program, but even better when the people you work with are so supportive such as the folks at the station who have made such a loyal commitment to covering university athletics over the year. there's a reason they've been on the air for 50 years. Thanks for all the support and for the support of the listening audience. You guys make it happen and we welcome your comments both good and bad. congrats to the v-reds on a truly dominating performance.

Mission accomplished! Awesome!!

Could anybody tell who will stay and go for next season?

David Kilfoil said...

As Gardiner MacDougall said to me last night when I asked him a similar question, "Let's just enjoy the moment." Which is the non-answer answer.

could be a massive exodus. Hepditch and MacIntosh both definitely done. Likely tremblay, Bailey, Gallant, Yeomans, perhaps Fullerton, perhaps Seymour, you have to wonder about Kid, will he get a pro offer? Prosychen might be questionable as well. Good strong nucleus however with MacNeil and Culligan, wright, Shutron, et al.

David Kilfoil said...

As has been mentioned. only Josh Hepditch and Lachlan MacIntosh are out of eligibility ... and the only players who will have three rings.

Anonymous said...

Congratulations, guys. A great weekend for the entire team. There were standouts for sure, but exceptional team play got it done. Something that hasn't been mentioned much was Tremblays play - very physical in all games and I think he bruised as many opponents as Harty!
.....Red Devil

I think it's time to put to rest for good any bashing about the goaltending...only one goal against in three games against three of the best teams in Canada...and a second ring for Fullerton...I think he is pretty good regardless of the team in front of him.

Also, I don't know who made that highlight video that they play before the games but it is excellent. I would love to see it posted on YouTube. Might have to be updated for next season though...

David Kilfoil said...

Andrew Brewer, the team's video guy, made that video I believe.

I agree 110%... that video was phenomenal. Great job Andrew. I would love to see it surface on YouTube as well.

Andrew might have music rights issues if they upload that video to YouTube ...

cant forget unb will have lacosta next year, i saw he had a sign up for a goalie clinic in freddy and stated he was suting up for the vreds next year

UNB Bruins Fan said...

Yeah I seen him walking around with a tournament pass around his neck...and then sitting up with all the players who were scratches for the game last night. I can't imagine anyone taking the starting job from Fullerton though, unless he decides to move on.

UNB Bruins Fan said...

Still way too early to talk about but I wouldn't be surprised to see quite a few players moving on after this season...unless they think the only thing better than winning the Championship on home ice in their last season is to do it again. If they do lose a lot of guys I'm not too concerned though...you know they will be replaced by another crop of impact players.

Someone may want to tell Glen Treadway (Home Depot manager)to put on a pair of dress pants and shed the faded, baggy old jeans that he had on last night. He should be ashamed to wear such hillbilly clothing when he is presenting the banner on national television.Geez Homer!. lol...................

I didn't think that Mike Ouzas would play much until the year after Bourcier graduated, then he got a shutout in his first game at the Aitken Centre. Was pretty sure Yeomans was going to inherit the starting goalie job and Fullerton would be a solid back up, then he set a record for consecutive shutouts and won a national championship.

So I'll I'm not going to guess who will start next year. I believe Coach MacDougall will play both goalies and go with whoever gets hot down the stretch.

As for player turnover - UNB has overcome losing a tonne of studs. There were only 2 players left from 2007, and almost half new again since 2009. They seem to find a way hang near the top.

Congrats to Glen Treadway for supporting a winner and not fretting about one's attire meeting 'national' standards. What a lame criticism. The problem with the 'suits' is that they look that they are there for the camera and 'national image'. I'll take the homers - at least they are honest. If Fredericton is the home of 'homers' then it's a major step above 'well dressed' losers. Go Glen. Home Depot should be proud. Gee, maybe I'll go on over to the store and by something just to show support and not bother changing my jeans beforhand.

I don't want to speak for anybody else but I have to say what a remarkable season from the first exhibition game until the very end, simply unbelieveable.

To win two championships on home ice is simply unreal!!!!!

I have a question though..is it possible does anybody know to maybe have the championship game done on a dvd and to put on sale for the fans. I mean obviously we know the end result but to own a piece of UNB history is something that would be pretty remarkable

Just a thought

If you want a copy of the game I suggest you email someone close to the team at the AUC and I am sure they can point you in the right direction. I was looking for the 2004 game against Alberta and the 2007 Final against Moncton a year or so back and Maureen Sparks (I think) was who I talked to and was able to get them for me...it was something like $20 for the Alberta game (because they had to convert it from VHS to DVD) and the Moncton game was free I believe.

We aren't able to distribute/ sell the TV version of the game since it belongs to Rogers Sportsnet. You may be able to buy a copy from them.

If there is interest in a copy of the game from the video system camera without commentators or sound let us know and we can look into it.

Anonymous said...

I know the CIS site used to sell old Championship games to...but I don't know if they still do as I haven't looked into it in awhile.

I don't know about Sportsnet but I don't think you can buy old TSN programming from them. Again, could be different now though.

Anonymous said...

Well I contacted sportsnet and for $75 they are willing to sell me a copy of the game on DVD...yikes

Anonymous said...

I meant to ask this awhile ago but forgot...was Shutron injured for Nationals...or was he a healthy scratch?

Anonymous said...

one of my friends recorded the game so I might be able to get you a copy.

Anonymous said...

Shutron was a scratch. OHL All Star, 2 memorial cups and a Memorial cup champion in his last year at Windsor. Conditioning was a factor and no room in the lineup, on the deepest blueline in the country.

I also noticed that home Depot dude had jeans on. What was he thinking, for frig sake, he was passing out that banner to Baily with the likes of that on, National TV! It's not the Frex dude!

Clendenning was a force all throughout Nationals! He Played desperate and brought a big time physical presence to UNB's forecheck game. Excellent on the draws and hard as hell to beat in the corner's. He cfahipped in with a huge clutch goal against Calgary. He also elevated his game during UNB's 3'rd championship run in Thunder Bay, in 2009. Hepditch pass on the "A", couldn't find a better home, on Clendennings jersey that is!

Should I leave my contact info for anybody who might be able to get me a copy.

I have no objections if there is any cost involved.
