Third Period Propels V-Reds To 3-2 OT Win

A strong third period and commitment to battling through adversity carried the Varisty Reds to a thrilling 3-2 ovetime victory in game 1 of the AUS Finals.

UNB did not have a great start to this game.  Giving up a few early power-play chances including a 5-on-3, they gave the X-Men a chance to build momentum early.  STFX carried that momentum to a 2-0 lead midway through the second period before the V-Reds finally showed up to play.  After 2 periods, the X-Men had outshot the V-Reds 17-12.  If no for Travis Fullerton, this one might have been out of reach.

The third period was all UNB.  Two quick goals in the 3rd period by Hunter Tremblay and Daine Todd a few minutes apart tied the game at 2 goals each.  After 3 periods, UNB lead the shot count by a 24-21 margin.  Early in the overtime period Ben Wright fired home the game winner, capping the comeback and putting an end to any notion of STFX getting inside the heads of UNB players.

UNB leads the best of five AUS Final 1-0.  Game 2 takes place tomorrow night at 7PM.

Having to battle from behind to win tonight against a stronger St FX team than the team that knocked them out last year can only help UNB as they prepare for the Nationals.

The Tremblay, Culligan and Todd line came up big tonight and all 3 goals began with faceoff wins in the St. FX zone.

Chris Culligan has a very nice playoff streak going of being involved in all 4 winning goals so far this year, with 2 goals himself and 2 assists to go along with 2 other assists.

Tonight, it was Hunter Tremblay's goal that seemed to spark the team in the 3rd period and he leads the team in the playoffs with 2 goals and 6 assists for 8 points, so far.

I'm hoping for a 1st period tomorrow night like our 3rd period tonight.

I agree...as soon as Tremblay scored the game definitely changed from a style St. FX likes (trapping, grinding, keeping everything to the outside, taking advantage of their opportunities) to one that favours UNB (more wide open, faster paced)...UNB started to dictate the play from that point forward. Before that though...I thought I was watching last year's series all over again. That's why I think getting the first goal against X is maybe more important than against any other team.

Deciding to make the effort on the 'little' battles paved the way for tying and winning the game.

I thought Fillier played really well tonight. He battled hard and crushed a few X-Men in the 3rd. Im glad that Gardiner recognized that and put him on the 2nd line with Bailey and Macintosh.

I agree with the comment about Fillier...really played within himself and banged some bodies which is his game. Harty and Todd were really solid as well. And tremblay led by example as he always does. Really thought X made a huge mistake when coming out in the third and played to protect the lead. UNB got back into it, and had momentum. X lost that momentum in the third and couldn't turn it on again. That's why trying to protect a lead can be a big mistake. Stick to the game plan and stay with it.

Got a question completely unrelated to the game. Does anyone know the song that UNB first warms up to when they come out? I'm sure it will be the same one tonight. Great pump up song.

How does it go? Sing a few bars... :)

I believe the one they skate out to just before puck drop is Linkin' Park, I'll have to pay attention tonight to see if the warm up song is different.

Catalyst is the song by Linkin' Park I believe. The song I am wondering about plays right before it when they come out for warm up. LOL this is bugging me a lot.

Since I'm here I might as well give me two cents about the game last night. I've never been so bored at UNB hockey game for the first two periods as long as I've been going for the past 15 or so years when I was just in elementary school. The forwards just kept trying to bring the puck over the blue lines themselves and not dump and chase and dominate the D like they did in the third. I agree with two points stated above about scoring the first goal is going to be huge tonight and also Fillier played awesome in the third with a couple huge hits to get the team pumped and ready for a comeback. One other thing I noticed last night and only got one chance to see it as both teams were very discipline was UNB's powerplay. Usually they have the two d and one forward above the hashmarks and its mostly just them passing it around the whole powerplay and all you can here is the crowd pleading for them to shoot. What I'm getting at is that after X's 5-3 PP the shots were 6-0 for X and UNB had a PP of their own and they got almost half of their two period total of shots on this PP with 5. If they get more opportunities tonight with the man advantage and do the same thing they did last night on the PP I believe they will have much more success

The song that plays as they come out for warm up is called Vox Populi by 30 Seconds to Mars.

The Linkin Park song is New Divide.

I agree...those first two periods were boring/quite frustrating to watch. It seemed like every time I turned around X was breaking up the ice on a 3 on 2...but as soon as UNB got the puck back and went up the ice they were met by 5 blue sweaters.

I don't know about Linkin' Park or Vox Populi.

I know they have used "I'm Shipping Up to Boston" by Dropkick Murphys.
