V-Reds Add Shayne Wiebe

Today's Daily Gleaner is revealing what might be the worst-kept secret of the past week.  Shayne Wiebe has joined the Varsity Reds as the latest recruit of the 2011-12 season.

Shayne split his WHL career between the Kamloops Blazers and Brandon Wheat Kings.  Last year in 72 games with Brandon, he scored 44 goals and put up 21 assists for a 65 points while serving as team captain.  He spent the last few months with the St John's IceCaps of the AHL before deciding to pursue his education.

Welcome to UNB, Shayne.

Massive addition. Welcome aboard Shayne.

I find the focus on 40-goal scores interesting. It sounds great, but they have a 70+ game season.

This isn't a knock against Shayne, I'm glad he chose UNB - this makes our depth silly (next year is now covered).

But, at 65Pts in 72 games - that translates into 25 pts in the AUS (12pts by Christmas which doesn't put him in the top 20 this season at the break - it would be T6 on UNB alone).

Shayne isn't known as a natural goal scorer but that of a hard worker that plays penalty kill, sets up others well on the power play and pain in the butt kind of player towards other teams! Enjoy him he's a great guy!
