MacDougall To Lead Canadian Team At Universiade

University of New Brunswick head coach Gardiner MacDougall has been named the head coach of the Canadian men's hockey team at the 26th Winter World University Games to be held in Maribor, Slovenia January 30th - February 9th, 2013, Canadian University Sport and Atlantic University Sport announced Monday. He will be assisted by St. FX head coach Brad Peddle and UPEI bench boss Forbes MacPherson.

Since 1997 the team has been comprised of players from each of the country's three conferences on a rotating basis. The AUS last competed in 2007 and won the gold medal in Turin, Italy - a team that feautured V-Reds Rob Hennigar, Darryl Boyce, Colin Sinclair, and Dustin Friesen. MacDougall was an assistant coach on Saint Mary's Trevor Steinburg's staff for that squad. Canada West brought home a silver medal in 2009 when the event was held in Harbin, China and the OUA finished 3rd in 2011 in Erzurum, Turkey. Russia has won the last two tournaments.

Overall Canada has won 12 medals in 13 appearances at the event, including three gold, three silver, and six bronze. In addition to the gold medal the AUS team won in 2007 Canada also finished first in 1991 and 1981. The only other time the AUS donned the Maple Leaf the team finished 2nd, in 2001 in Zakopane, Poland.
