V-Reds Skate To 5-0 Victory Over STU

The University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds defeated the St. Thomas Tommies 5-0 before 2766 people tonight at the AUC in the 20th Mark Jeffrey Memorial Game. The victory is UNB's 31st consecutive over their cross-campus rivals and gives them a three point cushion in the race for first place.

UNB received power play goals from Luke Gallant (Wiebe, Harty) at 1:24 and Tyler Carroll (Nesbitt, Gallant) at 19:31 of the first period to take a 2-0 lead. Shots favoured the V-Reds 15-4.

The Varsity Reds doubled their lead in the middle frame as Shayne Wiebe (Corcoran, Carroll), on a breakaway at 8:10, and Kyle Bailey (Harty, Wiebe), on the power play at 12:13, found the net behind STU goalie Charles Lavigne. Shots were 18-6 for UNB.

Jordan Clendenning would round out the scoring after taking a cross-ice pass from Jonathan Harty on a 2 on 1 at 15:41 of the third period. Shots were 13-4 for UNB in the period and 46-14 overall. Travis Fullerton wasn't tested very often and notched his 2nd shutout of the season. It is also his 12th career regular season shutout.

UNB went 3 for 7 on the power play. STU was 0 for 7. UNB went 48 and 24 in the face-off circle.

Shayne Wiebe (1 goal, 2 assists) was player of the game. Tyler Carroll (1 goal, 1 assist) and Luke Gallant (1 goal, 1 assist) were second and third stars, respectively.

Thomas Nesbitt was back in the line-up, replacing Geordie Wudrick. Josh Kidd, Ben Wright, Chad Denny, Jeff Lee, Stefan Salituro, and Luke Lynes all remained out.

Before the game 5th year defenceman Luke Gallant from Bedford, Nova Scotia and 4th year defenceman Jonathan Harty from Oromocto, New Brunswick, both MBA students, were named co-winners of the Mark Jeffrey Award.

The V-Reds finish the regular season this weekend with games at UPEI on Friday night and then back at the AUC against UdeM in the season finale on Saturday night. Both games are scheduled for 7pm.
