V-Reds Grab 2-0 Series Lead

The University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds defeated the Universite de Moncton Aigles Bleus 4-2 tonight before 2785 people at the AUC. With the victory UNB takes a 2-0 series lead in the best-of-5 AUS Finals.

UdeM would get on the board first at 8:04 of the opening frame when Guillaume Parenteau took a pass from behind the goal line and quickly snapped it past UNB goalie Travis Fullerton. The Varsity Reds evened things up with a power play goal by Kyle Bailey at 18:43. Jonathan Harty and Luke Gallant received assists on the goal. That was all of the scoring in a period that seen UNB hold 14-7 shot advantage.

Once again the second period proved to be the difference. UNB would take the lead at 4:33 of the second period courtesy of a Harty (Houde-Caron, Campbell) shot from the blue line that eluded Moncton goalie P. A-Marion. The V-Reds would strike again only minutes later when Luke Gallant blasted a shot from the point after a Bailey face-off win that made its way past through a screen in front. Eric Faille pulled Moncton back within one with a power play goal at 11:49 only 16 seconds after Gallant was sent off for holding. However, UNB restored their two goal lead at 18:23 after Fullerton came out to the blue line to play the puck and had to scramble back to the net after some pressure by a Moncton player, which caused a few anxious moments among the crowd. The V-Reds eventually gained possession of the puck near their own goal and Chris Culligan worked it up to Wiebe who entered the UdeM zone, skated down the left side, circled behind the net, and found Bailey in front who jammed it past Marion. Shots in the period were 15-10 for UNB in the period.

There was no scoring in the third period despite UNB having a couple power plays and Moncton being awarded a 4 minute man advantage, their second of the game. Shots favoured the V-Reds 9-5 in the period and 38-22 in the game.

The series resumes Sunday night in Moncton as the Varsity Reds look to claim their second consecutive AUS crown. Game time is scheduled for 7 PM.
