Western Gets By UQTR In OT

The Western Ontario Mustangs defeated the UQTR Patriotes 3-2 in overtime before another sell-out crowd of 3750 at the AUC tonight. Julian Cimadamore was the hero for the Mustangs, firing a slap shot past Guillaume Nadeau at 4:21 of the extra frame.

Both goalies were great in this one as shots were 43-33 in favour of UQTR and there were a number of great scoring chances for each side. Mustangs goalie Josh Unice was especially sharp in the first period when the Patriotes sent 22 shots his way but were only able to beat him once. The score was 1-1 after one period and 2-2 after two. There was no scoring in the 3rd but both teams had late power plays, including one for Western that carried over into the extra frame.

- Players of the game were Unice (41 saves) and Nadeau (30 saves).

- CIS rookie of the year Zach Harnden left the game early in the first period and did not return so we will be sure to keep an eye on his status for tomorrow.

- Thankfully for us, with the victory by the Mustangs we don't have to break out our old calculus notes and try to figure out possible tie-breakers. Since UNB and Western both won their game the math is easy - tomorrow's game is a true semi-final with the winner moving on to Sunday's championship game.

- Just a reminder that the game is at 4:30 PM and will air nationally on SportsNet.
