UNB's Pre-Season Schedule

With the announcement yesterday that the Varsity Reds will play an exhibition game against the AHL's Portland Pirates it appears that their pre-season schedule has been finalized. It will include 8 games (the 6th straight season it has featured at least that many) and, according to head coach Gardiner MacDougall, is "one of our most competitive non-conference schedules ever." UNB will be looking to extend their impressive streak of 35 straight victories against CIS teams in exhibition games, dating back to December 31st, 2005.

Similar to last season the Varsity Reds will once again open their exhibition schedule against a fellow AUS team at a neutral site when they play the University of Moncton in Summerside, PEI on September 17th in a rematch of last season's AUS Finals.

The Varsity Reds then host their annual Fall Classic and it will include games against two OUA East teams - the Carleton Ravens on September 20th and the UQTR Patriotes on September 23rd. This will mark only the second time the V-Reds and Ravens have met with UNB skating to a 7-0 victory at the 2008 Fall Classic. By contrast this will be the 12th meeting between the V-Reds and Patriotes, with 11 coming in the last 13 years. UNB currently holds 9-1-1 record against the Patriotes, including a 3-2 exhibition victory and 6-1 win at Nationals last season.

The following weekend the Varsity Reds will travel to Montreal, Quebec for a pair of games. On September 28th they will face the defending University Cup Champion McGill Redmen. UNB has never lost to McGill, compiling a perfect 7-0 record against them. The following night they face off with the Concordia Stingers for the first time.

The Varsity Reds conclude their exhibition schedule the next weekend with their annual trip to the United States. As mentioned previously the V-Reds will take on the Portland Pirates on October 4th. On October 6th they will travel to Chestnut Hill to play the defending NCAA Champion Boston College Eagles. The two national contenders have met four times previously, with BC winning three. The next afternoon UNB wraps up the pre-season with a tilt against the University of Maine Black Bears at Alfond Arena in Orono. This will be the 6th season out of the last 7 that the two cross-border rivals have met and will be the 22nd match-up overall, with UNB going 5-14-2 previously.
