V-Reds Face Defending Champs Tonight

The last time Varsity Reds fans seen the McGill Redmen the team was parading the University Cup around the Aitken Centre last March after defeating the Western Mustangs in overtime to capture the first national championship in school history. Tonight in Montreal the Redmen host the team many believed would be joining them in that game - the University of New Brunswick - in a rematch of the 2011 national final that many of us won't soon forget, as well as a game pitting the last two CIS champions against one another. Game time is 8 PM AST.

After dropping their pre-season opener to the University of Moncton the Varsity Reds have picked up victories against the Carleton Ravens and UQTR Patriotes. Meanwhile McGill, who have lost a number of top players from last season including sniper Francis Verreault-Paul, former CIS player of the year Alexandre Picard-Hooper, CIS defenceman of the year Marc-Andre Dorion, and team captain Evan Vossen, haven't missed a beat so far as they have posted convincing wins over RMC, Waterloo, and Western.

This will mark the 8th time since 1983 that these two storied hockey teams have met, with 5 of those coming since 2005. The V-Reds have won each of the previous 7 encounters, outscoring the Redmen 40-13 in the process. However, this will be the first time the game will be held outside of Fredericton. Here is the breakdown:

September 30th, 1983: 7-1 win
October 1st, 1983: 6-4 win
September 30th, 2005: 4-0 win
September 25th, 2009: 7-6 win
September 26th, 2009: 5-1 win
December 30th, 2010: 7-1 win
March 27th, 2011: 4-0 win (National Final)
