V-Reds Fall In Pre-Season Opener

UPDATE: Hockeyscene.com and The Journal Pioneer have both posted their game recaps.

The University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds dropped a 6-2 decision in their first exhibition game of the season tonight against the University of Moncton. This marks the first time since 2004 the V-Reds have lost their pre-season opener.

The Varsity Reds tied the game at one early in the second on a Chris Culligan (Nesbitt, Todd) marker but Moncton tallied a power play goal late in the period before putting it away in the third. Cam Braes (Carroll, Culligan) scored his first UNB goal in the final frame but it wasn't enough on this night, despite the shots favouring the V-Reds 37-25.

Bryce Swan, Colby Pridham, and Chad Denny all sat out while Luke Lynes was back in the line-up after missing the majority of last season with a concussion. Travis Fullerton and Dan LaCosta split the goaltending duties.

For those of you curious the new recruits were wearing the following jersey numbers: Swan (#9, according to the program), Braes (#10). Pridham (#19, according to the program), Critchlow (#23), and Robertson (#24).

UNB will look to rebound when they welcome the Carleton Ravens to the AUC on Thursday night for their first home game of the season.
