V-Reds Pick Up First Victory Of Season

The University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds rebounded from an opening season loss to defeat the visiting Carleton Ravens 3-1 tonight before 1251 fans at the AUC in their first home game of the season.

After a scoreless first period that seen plenty of physicality and after the whistle scrums the Ravens opened the scoring 7:10 into the middle frame when freshman Jack Walchessen jumped on a rebound in front of the net and put it behind Travis Fullerton. The Varsity Reds received a late power play and would convert when Nick MacNeil redirected a Marc-Antoine Desnoyers shot with 18 seconds left in the frame to knot the game. Daine Todd also picked up an assist on the goal.

UNB carried the momentum into the third period and began to take over control of the game. They were finally rewarded at 13:46 when MacNeil (Desnoyers, Carroll) converted his second power play goal of the night to give the V-Reds their first lead of the game. The Ravens were unable to take advantage of a late power play and Cam Braes (Nesbitt, Wright) secured the victory with an empty net goal with 25 seconds remaining.
