V-Reds Squeak By Patriotes

UPDATE: David Kilfoil, via UNB Athletics, and www.hockeyscene.com both have game recaps posted.

The University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds defeated the UQTR Patriotes 3-2 before 1356 fans this afternoon at the AUC to improve their exhibition record to two wins and one loss.

UNB came out and controlled the majority of play in the opening period against a UQTR team that was playing their 3rd game in as many days. The V-Reds finally got on the board at 15:19 after Geordie Wudrick intercepted a UQTR break-out pass at the blue line and dished it to Daine Todd, who worked a two-on-one with rookie Cam Braes. Braes took a cross-ice pass and deked Patriotes goalie Marc-Antoine Gelinas to put the puck in. That was the only goal of the period as UNB held a 14-6 shot advantage.

UQTR would tie the game just after the mid-point of the second period when Felix Petit unleashed a quick snap shot from the slot that beat V-Reds goalie Dan LaCosta. UNB responded only 93 seconds later on a two man advantage when Daine Todd's point shot found the back of the net. UNB almost extended their lead near the end of the period when Gelinas was forced to make an acrobatic save on a Chris Culligan wrap-around attempt. Shots favoured UNB 12-5 in the period.

The Patriotes came out hard in the third period and almost tied the game at 2:06 when a shot from outside of the blueline took a strange bounce off of one of the officials and past a surprised and out of position LaCosta. Fortunately for UNB the goal was disallowed since the puck cannot hit an official immediately before going in. UQTR kept pressing and scored one that counted at 6:57 when Maxime Gravel was credited with the goal after his shot appeared to bounce off of a UNB skate and in. The V-Reds took their third lead of the day at 10:18 as Culligan took a pass from Tyler Carroll, who was behind the net, and one-timed it off of the crossbar and in. A UQTR penalty with 59.9 seconds remaining pretty much extinguished any hope they had of tying the game and UNB held on for a 3-2 final. Shots were 8-6 in the period for UNB and 34-17 in the game.

- Josh Kidd, Bryce Swan, Colby Pridham, and Luke Lynes were all out of the line-up.

- LaCosta and Gelinas played the entire game in net for their respective teams.

- UNB was 1 for 7 on the power play while UQTR was 0 for 5.

- Cam Braes was wearing #5 for the game, as opposed to #10, which he had worn in the previous two games.

- UNB wore a weird home white jersey/away red sock combination.

- UNB is on the road this upcoming weekend when they travel to Montreal for a pair of games. They play McGill on Friday and Concordia Saturday with both games slated for 7PM EST start times.
