Varsity Reds Begin Pre-Season Tonight

After a long summer the University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds will finally take to the ice tonight for an exhibition match against the University of Moncton in a game that will be held at the Evangeline Recreational Centre in Abrams-Village, PEI.

The V-Reds will look to continue their recent run of success against the Aigles Bleus as they have won 16 of the last 17 meetings between the two teams. That, of course, includes a three game sweep in last year's AUS Championship.

This will mark only the 3rd exhibition game between the two clubs since Gardiner MacDougall became head coach before the 2000-2001 season, with UNB winning 5-3 in October of 2003 in a game held in Yarmouth, NS and 4-1 in December of 2009 in the finals of the Pete Kelly Cup.

UNB will also be looking to extend their streak of 35 consecutive exhibition victories over CIS competition, which dates back to a 4-1 loss to Saint Mary's on December 31st, 2005.

It will certainly be a very different looking team than the one that suffered a disappointing loss at home against Western in the University Cup semi-finals in March, as upwards of ten players off that team have moved on since the end of the season. However, tonight's game will mark the first time highly touted recruits Bryce Swan, Colby Pridham, Cameron Critchlow, Cam Braes, and Adrian Roberston suit up in a V-Reds uniform and we are sure fans are wondering how they will all fit in the line-up. Other questions, such as who will be named team captain and alternates, how the defence will look after losing arguably the top three rearguards in the conference, and how the goaltending situation will play out after last season's injury-riddled campaign, will all begin to be answered tonight.

For anyone who is planning on making the trek the rink is located at 1745 Rte. 124, C0B 2E0, Abrams-Village, PEI and advance tickets are available by contacting (902) 854-2592.

Meanwhile, for those of you looking to follow the game online we should note that UNBHockey on Twitter will NOT be offering updates during the game tonight, but you may be able to follow along here or here. (although neither has been confirmed)

Hockey is back, folks!
