UNB Takes First Game Against Russia

The University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds raced out to a 5-1 lead after the first period against the Russian Red Stars and never looked back, skating to a 7-3 victory this afternoon at Harbour Station in Saint John.

UNB received first period goals by Ben Shutron, Adrian Robertson, Taylor MacDougall, Nick MacNeil, and Cam Braes. Artyom Borodkin tied the game at 1 in the early going before the V-Reds scored 4 quick goals to build a lead that proved to be insurmountable. Shots in the period were 12-3 for UNB.

After a scoreless 2nd period in which UNB was outshot 5-4 the Red Stars cut the deficit in half  in the third on goals by Kirill Tambiev and Danil Faizullin. The V-Reds would put the game away with late goals by Dion Campbell, in his first game back in a UNB uniform, and Cameron Critchlow. Shots in the period (16-7) and game (24-23) favoured Team Russia.

- Travis Fullerton picked up the win in goal.

- Nick MacNeil was named the player of the game.

- Announced attendance was 2307.

- Defenceman Tim Priamo, who played two season in the CIS with Guelph and another year in the ECHL before sitting out the first half of this season while recovering from an injury, made his Varsity Red debut this afternoon. He wore Luke Lyne's #15.
