V-Reds Open Tournament With Win Over Huskies

The University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds got their 2013 University Cup started on the right foot with a solid 3-1 victory over the host Saskatchewan Huskies.

The V-Reds carried the majority of play in the first period, out-shooting the Huskies 16-7 and forcing goalie Ryan Holfeld to make a couple big saves, but the game remained scoreless after 20 minutes.

The second period was a different story, however, as three goals were scored. Jimmy Bubnick gave the almost-6000 in attendance a reason to cheer when he potted a power play goal at 5:26 of the frame to give the hometown Huskies a 1-0 lead. The V-Reds rebounded from the goal and started to apply more pressure. They were rewarded at 10:47 on the power play with a controversial goal by Daine Todd (MacNeil, Desnoyers). Todd's shot originally looked to have crossed the line, however the goal light did not come on and the referee's did not signal a goal. The referee's then gathered with the goal judge to discuss the play and declared the goal good. The Varsity Reds would strike again on the power play with only 57 seconds remaining in the period when Tyler Carroll finished off a nice 3-way passing play with Cam Braes and Todd by firing a shot from the slot into the top corner. Shots in the period favoured UNB 12-7.

Saskatchewan came out in the 3rd period pushing hard for the tying goal, but UNB played stifling defence, limiting their chances despite the Huskies possessing the puck more than they had in the first 40 minutes. The V-Reds made things interesting by taking a penalty with just under 6 minutes left. They successfully killed it off and just over a minute later Todd skated the puck through the neutral zone and into the offensive zone, split two defenders, and drew Holfeld out of position before throwing a pass across the slot to Antoine Houde-Caron, who snapped it into the waning net. The Varsity Reds took another penalty at 18:29 but no harm came out of it. Shots in the period were 14-10 for UNB, who held an advantage of 42-24 in the contest.

- Adrian Robertson was back in the line-up. Chad Denny, Tim Priamo, and Cameron Critchlow were all out. Houde-Caron moved up from the 4th line to take Critchlow's spot on the 3rd line with Stefan Salituro slotting into the 4th line.

- UNB was 2 for 5 on the power play. Saskatchewan was 1 for 4.

- We don't have the official stats, but the V-Reds (and particularly Colby Pridham) dominated in the face-off circle.

- Dan LaCosta and Jimmy Bubnick were named their team's player of the game.

- UNB remains perfect all-time against Saskatchewan, improving to 4-0-0.

- With the win the V-Reds earn a day off tomorrow. The Huskies will need to regroup and prepare for the UQTR Patriotes tomorrow night. UNB and UQTR will square off on Saturday night. The Alberta Golden Bears and Saint Mary's Huskies tangle in tomorrow's afternoon game. Of course all of the games will be broadcast live on CHSR-FM (97.9).
