Warriors Stun Top-Ranked Golden Bears

UPDATE: TSN.ca and the CIS website have both posted game recaps.

Well, no one seen this one coming. The 6th seeded Waterloo Warriors, picked by many to be easy prey for the #1 seed University of Alberta Golden Bears, defeated the Bears 2-1 in the opening game of the 2012 University Cup this afternoon in Saskatoon.

The Warriors received power play goals from CIS leading scorer Justin Larson in the first period and Blake Chartier in the third period before Alberta made a furious push in the final minutes. The Golden Bears got a power play goal of their own from Torrie Dyck at 16:30 of the final frame to cut the deficit to one and then had a golden opportunity just as time expired, but Johnny Lazo's shot off of a face-off win rang off the post. Warriors goaltender Keaton Hartigan came up big multiple times throughout the game as Alberta out-shot Waterloo 43-13 and controlled the majority of the play. He also got some help as Alberta hit 5 posts on the day.

-  The Golden Bears have now lost 4 straight games at the University Cup. They fell to Saint Mary's in overtime in the CIS Championship Game in 2010, lost to both St. FX and McGill in Fredericton in 2011, and did not qualify for the tournament last season.

- Waterloo will have tomorrow off before playing Saint Mary's on Saturday afternoon in a game which will be broadcast live by Rogers Sportsnet. The Golden Bears will need to quickly regroup as they take on the Huskies tomorrow afternoon and will need a win to keep their chances alive.

- The second game of the tournament will take place at 10 PM AST this evening with the host Saskatchewan Huskies battling the University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds.
