OTTAWA (CIS) – The University of Alberta Golden Bears top
the CIS men’s hockey national rankings for the sixth time in
as many polls this season but still can’t create any
separation atop the Canada West conference standings.
For the sixth consecutive week, Alberta and reigning University
Cup champion UNB were the only teams to receive first-place
consideration from the media panel, with 16 number one nods going
to the Bears (169 total points) and the remaining one to the
Varsity Reds (152 points).
In addition to Alberta (10-0) and UNB (7-0), the Calgary Dinos
(10-0) also show an unblemished record heading into the third
weekend of November and are keeping pace with the Bears out west.
Calgary holds on to the third spot in the media poll for the fourth
week in a row.
Rounding out the new Top 10 are the No. 4 McGill Redmen (7-1-1 /
up one position), No. 5 Acadia Axemen (6-1 / up one), No. 6 UPEI
Panthers (4-1-1 / down two), No. 7 Windsor Lancers (8-1 / up two),
No. 8 Lakehead Thunderwolves (7-1 / previously unranked), No. 9
Carleton Ravens (6-3 / down one) and No. 10 Western Mustangs (5-3 /
down three).
In Canada West, Alberta and Calgary both improved to 10-0 in
league play over the past weekend thanks to sweeps against
Lethbridge (6-3, 8-1) and Saskatchewan (3-1, 2-0),
respectively.
The Bears and Dinos have two-game sets scheduled against Regina
and Mount Royal this week, before they finally meet for the first
time since the start of the regular season, at Calgary on Nov. 22
and at Edmonton the following night.
Fittingly, the provincial rivals went 2-2 head-to-head in
pre-season action, back in September.
Meanwhile, UNB needed a shootout last Wednesday to edge No. 6
UPEI 3-2 in its lone outing of the past week. The V-Reds host
Acadia for another Top-10 battle on Friday and stay on home ice
Saturday to face Dalhousie.
