QMJHL Action Coming To AUC

Fredericton hockey fans will get a chance to see some high-level hockey a little sooner than usual this year as it has been announced the Moncton Wildcats and defending Memorial Cup champion Halifax Mooseheads will play an exhibition game at the Aitken Centre on Sunday, August 25th. Game time is scheduled for 4PM.

The game will be held in conjunction with the Atlantic University Hockey Celebrity Golf Event, which is to take place on Monday, August 26th at the Kingswood Golf course. The Varsity Reds have released ticket information for the upcoming hockey season, including two notabale changes. Here are the details:

- The first major change from previous years is that season tickets will now be valid for the Mark Jeffry Memorial Game as well as all AUS home playoff games, two events that have been excluded in recent years. - The second change is that all seats for hockey will be reserved this season, including those purchased online or at the box office before the game.

- The cost of a season pass for all UNB events this season (excluding CIS wrestling and soccer events) is $225 for an adult/senior and $75 for students 13+ with a valid ID. You can purchase a reserved hockey seat for a K-5 child for $50.

Lynes Transfers To Waterloo

The University of Waterloo have announced former Varsity Red forward Luke Lynes will be enrolling in the school's Master of Management Science program as well as suiting up for the Warriors hockey team this fall.

Lynes, a former 4th round draft pick of the Washington Capitals, joined the V-Reds over Christmas during the 2008 - 2009 season. He made an immediate impact with the team, scoring 5 goals and adding 12 assists in 15 games. However, he only played in 39 games over the next three years - notching 9 goals and 13 assists - as he battled concussions. The native of Rochester Hills, Michigan served as an assistant coach for parts of the last few seasons as he battled back from his injury problems.

In joining the Warriors Lynes will be joining a team that appears to be on the rise. The OUA school went 12-11-5 last year before embarking on a magical playoff run that seen them capture the OUA West Championship and earn a spot at the University Cup, their first appearance since 1996. Once there they shocked top-ranked Alberta before being eliminated by eventual silver medalist Saint Marys.

Bulls Sign Kidd

The San Francisco Bulls have signed former Varsity Reds defenceman Josh Kidd, according to the team's website. The Bulls are the ECHL affiliate of the NHL's San Jose Sharks.

There had been some speculation the 6'4'' defender would return to UNB this upcoming year for his fifth, and final, season of eligibility. However, he will instead be joining a Bulls team that has featured a number of former CIS players since entering the league prior to the 2012 - 2013 season, including former V-Reds Jordan Clendenning and Travis Fullerton.

Kidd, who battled numerous injuries during his time as a V-Red, leaves UNB having totaled 7 goals and 19 assists in 72 regular season games over four seasons. He added 3 goals and 4 assists in 24 playoff games as well as 1 goal and 2 assists in 8 games at the University Cup. Of course that goal will forever live in V-Reds lore as it broke a 1-1 tie with only 4.1 seconds remaining against the Calgary Dinos in UNB's opening game at the 2011 tournament, held at the Aitken Centre. The Varsity Reds would go on to claim their 4th national title three nights later.

Kidd's departure is the 4th this offseason from the V-Reds defensive corps as he joins Daine Todd, Ben Wright, and Chad Denny as having moved on. This is the 2nd straight year UNB will see a significant change to their back-end after Jonathan Harty, Luke Gallant, Bretton Stamler, and Spencer Corcoran left the team last year. The Varsity Reds current defense consists of Marc-Antoine Desnoyers, Ben Shutron, Tim Priamo, and Adrian Robertson.
