University Cup Final To Be An All-Canada West Affair

It was a tale of two very different games at the 2014 University Cup in Saskatoon today. In the afternoon semi-final the Alberta Golden Bears needed double overtime to finally dispatch the McGill Redmen 3-2, despite holding a 55-20 advantage in shots on goal. Johnny Lazo was the hero for the Bears as he tipped a hard Kruise Reddick pass from the boards into the top of the net while parked in front. In the evening semi-final it was all Huskies as Saskatchewan scored early and often in a 9-0 rout of the Windsor Lancers.

So the University Cup final will pit Canada West rivals Alberta and Saskatchewan in what will surely be a close and exciting game in front of a large, boisterous crowd at Credit Union Centre. The two teams have met five times previously this season with Alberta emerging victorious on each occasion, however every game was close.

The Golden Bears will be looking for their CIS-record 14th University Cup, while the Huskies are attempting to claim their 2nd. The only other National Championship game played between the two took place in 2005 when Alberta defeated Saskatchewan 4-3 in overtime in Edmonton.

The game can be seen on Rogers Sportsnet East/West/Pacific or online at (on a pay per view basis). Puck drop is scheduled for 4:30PM AST.
