OTTAWA (CIS) – The reigning University Cup champion
Alberta Golden Bears top the CIS men’s hockey rankings for
the third time in as many national polls this season.
For a second straight week, the Golden Bears (5-1) received 14 of
16 first-place votes and 157 points from the media panel. The other
No. 1 nods went to the UNB Varsity Reds and UQTR Patriotes, with
one apiece.
Rounding out the second rankings of the fall behind Alberta are No.
2 UNB (1-0 / no change), No. 3 Acadia (1-0 / up one position), No.
4 UQTR (3-0 / up two), No. 5 Mount Royal (5-1 / no change), No. 6
Calgary (4-2 / up one) and No. 7 Saskatchewan (4-2 / down four), as
well as a trio of teams that were unranked last Tuesday, including
No. 8 Manitoba (4-2), No. 9 Windsor (3-0) and No. 10 Western
(2-0).
After opening league play with a two-game split against UBC in late
September, the top-ranked Bears have now racked up four wins in a
row, the latest two coming in Regina on Friday and Saturday, by 2-1
and 5-2 scores.
The past weekend also marked the start of conference play in the
AUS, with UNB and Acadia both winning their lone duel. While the
Axemen easily defeated Dalhousie 4-0, the V-Reds had to come back
in the third period to edge UPEI 3-2 in overtime, in
Charlottetown.
In OUA action, UQTR exploded for 12 goals in two contests to take
care of RMC, 6-1, and Carleton, 6-4, in Trois-Rivières.
This week’s schedule features a pair of Top-10 doubleheaders
in Canada West, on Friday and Saturday. Mount Royal visits Manitoba
for two games in Winnipeg, while Alberta hosts Saskatchewan for a
pair in Edmonton.
Manitoba is coming off an impressive two-game sweep against
Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, 4-1 and 5-2.
