CIS Top Ten (#3): V-Reds Stay In 2nd

OTTAWA (CIS) – The reigning University Cup champion Alberta Golden Bears top the CIS men’s hockey rankings for the third time in as many national polls this season.

For a second straight week, the Golden Bears (5-1) received 14 of 16 first-place votes and 157 points from the media panel. The other No. 1 nods went to the UNB Varsity Reds and UQTR Patriotes, with one apiece.

Rounding out the second rankings of the fall behind Alberta are No. 2 UNB (1-0 / no change), No. 3 Acadia (1-0 / up one position), No. 4 UQTR (3-0 / up two), No. 5 Mount Royal (5-1 / no change), No. 6 Calgary (4-2 / up one) and No. 7 Saskatchewan (4-2 / down four), as well as a trio of teams that were unranked last Tuesday, including No. 8 Manitoba (4-2), No. 9 Windsor (3-0) and No. 10 Western (2-0).

After opening league play with a two-game split against UBC in late September, the top-ranked Bears have now racked up four wins in a row, the latest two coming in Regina on Friday and Saturday, by 2-1 and 5-2 scores.

The past weekend also marked the start of conference play in the AUS, with UNB and Acadia both winning their lone duel. While the Axemen easily defeated Dalhousie 4-0, the V-Reds had to come back in the third period to edge UPEI 3-2 in overtime, in Charlottetown.

In OUA action, UQTR exploded for 12 goals in two contests to take care of RMC, 6-1, and Carleton, 6-4, in Trois-Rivières.

This week’s schedule features a pair of Top-10 doubleheaders in Canada West, on Friday and Saturday. Mount Royal visits Manitoba for two games in Winnipeg, while Alberta hosts Saskatchewan for a pair in Edmonton.

Manitoba is coming off an impressive two-game sweep against Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, 4-1 and 5-2.
