V-Reds Grab Convincing Win Over Aigles Bleus

The University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds traveled to Moncton tonight for their 5th consecutive road game and came away with a big 7-2 victory over the Aigles Bleus. With the win the V-Reds improve to 7-1-1 on the season, including a 3-1-1 record on their recently completed road stretch.

- The Varsity Reds jumped out to a 2-0 lead after a dominating 1st period in which they out-shot Moncton 19-10. Tyler Carroll (Murray) got UNB on the board just 2:57 into the contest with a power play goal. They extended their lead at 15:18 when Randy Gazzola skated into the offensive zone and navigated his way through a number of defenders before dishing the puck off to Rob Mignardi in the slot, who put it home. Taylor MacDougall also picked up an assist on the goal.

- UNB made it 3-0 just 2:06 into the 2nd period after Cameron Critchlow (Halley) cleaned up a loose puck in front of the Moncton goal, sliding it past Aigles Bleus goaltender Adrien Lemay. The game was seemingly in control, however the V-Reds would take four straight penalties over the remainder of the period, including three within a 2:41 span. The Aigles Bleus made them pay with a 5-on-3 goal at 7:16 to cut the lead to 3-1. They carried the momentum over to even strength play and scored again just over four minutes to later to get right back into the game. UNB was able to push the lead back to two goals just 2:38 later when Cameron Brace took a long bank-pass off the boards from Gazzola, streaked down the right side, and sniped a shot top corner. Cam Braes got credit with the other assist on the marker. Shots in the period were 8 apiece.

- The V-Reds put the game out of reach in the 3rd period as they scored 3 more goals and out-shot Moncton 11-4. For the 3rd straight period UNB scored early. While shorthanded Philippe Halley took control of the puck in his own zone, skated down the left side, circled behind Moncton's net, and found a pinching Jordan Murray at the top of the opposite face-off circle, who proceeded to wrist it into the top corner at 3:08. Murray would strike again, this time on the power play, at 6:26 when he took a pass from Philippe Maillet and threw a shot from the blue-line along the ice that eluded Lemay. UNB's special teams would come up big one more time on the night when Taylor MacDougall (Gazzola, Petgrave) got behind the defence and scored a shorthanded goal at 12:45, just 15 seconds into a Moncton power play.

- UNB went with the same line-up as the previous couple of games as Chris Caissy and Alex Wall remained out.

- Shots in the game were 38-22 for UNB.

- David Shantz was solid in goal in picking up the win, stopping a couple of breakaways in the game.

- The V-Reds went 40 for 76 on face-offs with Cam Braes (12 for 21) leading the way.

- As mentioned, UNB' special teams had another great game. They were 2 for 6 on the power play, killed off 6 out of 7 Moncton opportunities, and scored two shorthanded goals.

- UNB has now won 8 straight regular season games over Moncton. This includes 5 in a row in Moncton.

- In other AUS action tonight the Saint Mary's Huskies pulled out a big 3-2 road victory over Acadia, St. FX defeated Dalhousie 5-1 in Antigonish, and UPEI beat St. Thomas 6-2 in Fredericton.

- The V-Reds are finally back at the AUC tomorrow night when they host the UPEI Panthers for their first home game in 2 1/2 weeks. Game time is 7PM.

- Attendance was 1166.
