Winning Streak Ends

The University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds had their 10 game winning streak snapped tonight as they fell 4-1 to the Acadia Axemen tonight in Wolfville. The V-Reds are now 18-3-2 on the season and tied with Acadia for 1st place in the conference, although they have a game in hand. The Axemen have beaten UNB all three times the two teams have met this year, meaning they hold the tie-breaker should there be a tie.

The V-Reds had a good first period as they out-shot the Axemen 8-5 and scored the lone goal (Cam Braes from Maillet and Brace on the power play at 5:30), but they were completely shutdown and outplayed for the final two periods. Acadia scored twice in the 2nd period and twice more late in the 3rd (including an empty netter) while holding a 20-11 shot advantage over the final 40 minutes. UNB had a difficult time generating much in terms of offense, and if not for some big saves by David Shantz the score could have been much worse.

UNB has now lost 5 out of their last 7 games in Wolfville and 7 out of their last 11 games overall against Acadia.

The V-Reds will make up their game in hand on the Axemen when they face St. Thomas on Wednesday night at the AUC, the beginning of 4 straight home games in 8 days for UNB. Game time is 7PM.
