Varsity Reds Doubled Up In Finale

For the first time in 9 seasons the University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds dropped their final game of the regular season, falling 4-2 to the UPEI Panther tonight in Charlottetown. Nonetheless, the V-Reds wrapped up another successful season with a 22-4-2 record to finish in 1st place.

UNB fell behind 1-0 after the 1st period and trailed 4-0 just 6:52 into the 2nd period after UPEI connected for 3 goals in a 3:37 span. Goals by Dylan Willick (Fraser) late in the 2nd period and Alex Wall (Maillet, Braes), on the power play at 8:42 of the 3rd, made it close, but their comeback bid was thwarted time and time again by UPEI goalie Mavric Parks, who was exceptional all night in the Panthers net.

- The V-Reds only dressed 16 skaters for the game with Tyler Carroll, Philippe Halley, Chris Caissy, R.D. Chisholm, and Jordan Murray all sitting out.

- Shots were 41-28 for UNB.

- Chris Carrozzi suffered his 1st loss of the season in net for the V-Reds.

- UNB was 1 for 2 on the power play. UPEI was 1 for 4.

- UPEI won 41 out of 78 face-offs in the game.

- Attendance was 890.

- Elsewhere around the league tonight: Moncton picked up a 5-3 road victory over St. Thomas, Saint Mary's clinched at least 3rd place with a 4-3 shootout win over St. FX at home, and Dalhousie stunned Acadia 5-2 in Wolfville.

- The regular season wraps up tomorrow night with a pair of games. UPEI hosts St. Thomas and St. FX travels to Acadia in a game that will determine 2nd place and who will receive the all-important 1st round bye. Acadia and Saint Mary's are both tied with 41 points with the Huskies holding the tiebreaker by virtue of their 3-1 record against the Axemen this year. So, if Acadia gets at least a point tomorrow night they finish 2nd, but if St. FX wins in regulation Saint Mary's will take the 2nd spot.

- For the V-Reds, they will be back in action in two weeks time when they host the lowest seed remaining from the best-of-3 quarterfinal in game 1 of the best-of-5 semi-finals. We will have more information once things become a little clearer. We will also have all of the usual 'end of season' stats, news, notes, and factoids in the coming days.
