Gazzola Named UNB Athlete Of The Week

Defenceman Randy Gazzola is the latest recipient of the UNB Varsity Reds and Dominoes Pizza male Athlete of the Week after playing a key role in three victories last week.

On Wednesday night Gazzola picked up an assist in UNB's 6-1 victory over cross-campus rival St. Thomas in the annual Mark Jeffrey Memorial Game. On Friday night he played the role of hero, scoring maybe the biggest goal of the season when potted the overtime winning goal to give the V-Reds their first win of the season over the 2nd place Acadia Axemen. Finally, on Saturday night he picked up another assist while playing well over 30 minutes as the V-Reds dressed only four defencemen.

Overall this season, the rookie from Thorold, Ontario has been an impact player for the V-Reds. He leads all AUS defencemen with 24 points (2 goals, 22 assists), his +22 rating is 2nd best in the conference, and he has only picked up one minor penalty all year. When it is all said and done Gazzola should definitely be one of the front-runners for AUS rookie of the year.
