News And Notes: AUS Semi-Finals Set, Winter Universiade, Maillet

- Both AUS quarter-finals have been completed and we now know the semi-finals match-ups. On Friday night St. FX completed a sweep of UPEI with a 3-1 victory in Charlottetown. In the other series Moncton pushed Saint Mary's to a 3rd and deciding game after winning 5-1 in Moncton on Thursday night, but the Huskies rallied from a 2-1 3rd period deficit to defeat the Aigles Bleus 3-2 last night to advance. These results mean the Varsity Reds will play St. FX and Acadia will play Saint Mary's in the best-of-5 semi-finals. We will have more info once the official schedule has been announced.

- Team Canada suffered a tough 3-2 shootout loss to eventual gold medal winners Russia in the semi-finals at the Winter Universiade on Friday afternoon. The team, made up of all-stars from the Canada West conference, rebounded with a 6-2 victory over the Czech Republic yesterday to capture the bronze medal.

- The accolades keep rolling in for Varsity Reds forward Philippe Maillet. After being named the UNB Athlete of the Week last week, he has been named the Varsity Reds Athlete of the Month. Check out an interview with him here.
