Exhibition Schedule Released, Carrozzi, Recruits

In his latest column the Daily Gleaner's Bill Hunt catches up with Varsity Reds head coach Gardiner MacDougall to discuss the upcoming season. A few of the most interesting tidbits included:

- The V-Reds have officially announced their exhibition schedule. They host McGill on September 18th and St. Thomas on September 21st. They then travel to Truro, Nova Scotia to face Dalhousie in a 2PM start on September 26th. They play 3 games in 4 days against American competition starting October 1st against the AHL's Portland Pirates. They will also face perennial national contender Boston College on October 3rd and defending Hockey East Champion UMass-Lowell on October 4th. The V-Reds will also head down south on October 23rd to play the University of Maine before visiting Harvard the next day.

- According to MacDougall, the V-Reds are still finalizing the details of the 11th annual Pete Kelly Memorial Tournament to be held over the Christmas break. It appears that the tournament will be going back to a multi-team affair for the first time since the 2009-2010 season as St. Thomas is a confirmed entry with "one and hopefully two other teams" also participating.

- For the 3rd straight year the V-Reds will be looking to add two new goaltenders. David Shantz exhausted his five years of eligibility and has signed with the Wichita Thunder of the ECHL. It was expected last year's back-up Chris Carrozzi, who would be entering his final season of eligibility, would take over the number one role. However, MacDougall confirmed Carrozzi "kind of struggled academically" last year and "wasn't going to be eligible to play" and has signed with a team in Assago, Italy.

- As for recruits, MacDougall stated that he hopes to announce something "next week hopefully".
