Late Goals Do In V-Reds

The University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds fell behind 2-0 after the 1st period, rallied to tie the game early in the 3rd period, but gave up two goals in the final 6 minutes to lose 4-2 against the Saint Mary's Huskies tonight in Halifax. UNB is now 8-1-2 on the season and tied with St. FX for 1st place after a disappointing weekend in which they only picked up a single point.

- Scoring for UNB were Jordan Murray (Brace, Caissy) on a 5-on-3 power play at 12:34 of the 2nd period and Philippe Halley (Carroll, Gazzola) at 1:45 of the 3rd, which tied the game at 2.

- UNB went with the same line-up as last night with Peter Trainor, Philippe Maillet, and Marcus McIvor all still out due to injury.

- Etienne Marcoux got the call in net and fell to 6-1-0 on the season.

- The V-Reds out-shot the Huskies 33-30 in the game, including 15-8 in the 3rd period when they forced Huskies goalie Cole Cheveldave to make numerous big saves to keep the game tied.

- SMU went 2 for 5 on the power play and UNB was 1 for 7.

- The Huskies won 42 out of the 71 face-offs in the game.

- In other AUS action tonight the Acadia Axemen tied the game with 18 seconds left before Kyle Farrell scored his 4th overtime winner of the season in a 6-5 home win over UPEI, St. FX moved into a first place tie with UNB with a 4-1 victory in Moncton against the Aigles Bleus, and Dalhousie outlasted St. Thomas 1-0 in a shootout in Fredericton.

- After 11 games the AUS standings look like this: UNB (8-1-2=18 points), St. FX (8-1-2=18), Acadia (8-2-1=17), Moncton (6-4-1=13), Saint Mary's (6-4-1=13, UPEI  (5-5-1=11), Dalhousie (3-6-2=8), and St. Thomas (0-10-1=1).

- Things don't get any easier for the V-Reds as their next game will be Friday night in Antigonish against the St. FX X-Men with 1st place on the line. Game time is 7PM and can be seen on

- We want to give a shout out to head coach Miles Pinsent and his #2 ranked UNB men's soccer team as they defeated the Universite du Quebec a Montreal 3-2 in today's CIS semi-final. We wish them all the best as they face the host and #1 ranked York Lions in tomorrow's CIS championship match.
