News And Notes: Top 10, Beauvillier, Mark Jeffrey Memorial Game

A few notes of interest from the last couple of days:

- After a week in which there was little movement in the CIS men's hockey rankings, the latest edition saw all but one team change position. The University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds received 2 first place voted and 142 points overall to move up to the number two spot, only behind the Saskatchewan Huskies (12 first place votes, 155 points), after posting impressive road victories over Saint Mary's and former number one ranked Acadia. The Axemen have slipped to 3rd while UQTR and Alberta round out the top five. St. FX (7th) and Saint Mary's (12th) were the other AUS teams to receive recognition.

- Forward Francis Beauvillier has been named the UNB Varsity Reds/Dominos Pizza male athlete of the week after a big weekend in which he helped the V-Reds claim a pair of crucial wins. On Friday night he potted two goals, was a +1, and had a game high 6 shots on goal in a 6-5 victory over Saint Mary's. The next night he scored the game's first goal and was a +1 as UNB blanked Acadia.

The 2nd year business student from St. Hyacinthe, Quebec has been one of the most consistent V-Reds this year. He has been held off the score sheet only 6 times in 21 games this season and had registered 12 goals (6th in the league) and 21 points (12th) to go along with a +15 rating (7th) thus far.

- The Varsity Reds website has a preview of tomorrow night's game against St. Thomas. It is, of course, the 24th annual Mark Jeffrey Memorial Game, but it is also Bell Let's Talk Day across Canada, which helps raise money for mental health issues and eliminates stigmas. We encourage everyone to come out to the rink tomorrow night to not only watch the V-Reds try to extend their 7 game winning streak but also support a great cause. Game time is 7PM.
