V-Reds Host Stingers For Pete Kelly Cup

After a five week layoff the University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds will return to the ice this weekend for a pair of games against the OUA's Concordia Stingers in the 11th annual Pete Kelly Cup. The first game is scheduled for 7PM Saturday night with the rematch going at 1PM on Sunday afternoon, both at the AUC.

The Stingers currently sit in 7th place in the 9 team OUA East division with a 7-8-3 record. They appear to be more of an offensive-oriented team, having scored 68 goals thus far (5th in the 19 team OUA conference), but they have also surrendered 67 goals (4th worst in the conference).

Concordia is led offensively by forwards Olivier Hinse (13th in the CIS in scoring with 23 points in 18 games), Jessyko Bernard (17 points in 14 games), former Saint John Sea Dog Scott Oke (16 points in 18 games), Philippe Hudon (15 points in 17 games), and Frederic Roy (15 games in 17 games).

These two teams have played 5 times previously - but just once in the last 20 years - with UNB holding a 3-2 edge:

October 27th, 1977 at UNB - Concordia wins 14-0
October 13th, 1984 at UNB - Concordia wins 6-3
October 14th, 1984 at UNB - UNB wins 6-3
October 7th, 1993 at UNB - UNB wins 5-3
September 29th, 2012 at Concordia - UNB wins 4-2

UNB will be looking to improve on a couple of impressive streaks this weekend:

- UNB has won 13 straight games against OUA teams and are 40-1-0 in their last 41 games.

- UNB has won 24 straight games against OUA East division teams dating back to 2003.

- They have won 16 straight exhibition games at the AUC since suffering a 1-0 loss to Providence on January 2nd, 2011.

- They have won 39 straight exhibition games at the AUC against CIS competition. Their last loss came to Saint Mary's in the finals of the first ever Pete Kelly Cup on December 31st, 2005.

- After dropping that inaugural Pete Kelly Cup in UNB has won the last 9.
