AUS Semi-Finals Set

Both of the best 2-of-3 AUS quarter-finals wrapped up last night with sweeps, with one series producing the expected result and the other resulting in a massive upset.

The #4 ranked Saint Mary's Huskies, fresh off of a 3-2 home victory in game 1 on Wednesday night, went into Moncton and routed the #5 Aigles Bleus 9-2 to advance. This wasn't much of a surprise given how hot the Huskies have been since getting many of their injured players back after Christmas.

In the other series the #6 UPEI Panthers pulled off a shocking upset of the #3 ranked Acadia Axemen with a 4-3 overtime victory in Charlottetown. This followed a 6-3 win in Wolfville on Wednesday night. Although the Panthers played the Axemen tough all year, this is arguably the biggest upset in the AUS since the 27-1-0 UNB Varsity Reds were swept in 3 games by St. FX in 2010. The Axemen were 19-7-2 this year and the #1 ranked team in the country as recently as January 19th while UPEI finished 11-14-3 and were never ranked in the top ten.

What these results mean for UNB is that the #1 ranked Varsity Reds will face the Panthers in the best 3-of-5 semi-finals beginning Thursday night as the AUC. The Huskies will face the #2 ranked St. FX X-Men in the other series.
