SMU Takes Home Bronze

The #8 ranked Saint Mary's Huskies scored four unanswered goals to claim a 5-2 victory over the #2 ranked Saskatchewan Huskies in the bronze medal game this afternoon at the University Cup in Halifax.

Anthony Repaci's 3rd goal of the tournament gave SMU the lead 4:13 into the game, but Saskatchewan would tie the game just 21 seconds later on a Jesse Ross marker and then take the lead 31 seconds into the 2nd period on a goal from Josh Roach. After that Saint Mary's really took control of the game, which was probably not surprising given Saskatchewan had played the two longest games in University Cup history in the last three days. Calder Brooks tied the game 2-2 at 11:33 of the 2nd and SMU took a 3-2 lead just under two minutes later courtesy Gerrad Grant. Stephen MacAulay and Brooks, with his 2nd of the game, scored 3rd period goals to round out the scoring.

Cole Cheveldave stopped 17 out of 19 shots to get the win while Jordon Cooke saved 26 out of 31 shots in the loss.

A Saint Mary's win ensures a 1-2-3 finish for the AUS in this year's tournament, the first time that has happened since St. FX, UNB, and Dalhousie swept the podium in 2004 in Fredericton.
