UNB Gets Win In Exhibition Opener

The University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds scored a 2-1 victory in their pre-season opener last night against the UPEI Panthers in a game that was played in Montague, PEI.

As the game was not web-cast, nor where there any updates on the UNB Hockey twitter, information about the contest is restricted to the box score.

Here is what we do know:

- After skating through a scoreless 1st period, the Panthers opened the scoring at 15:05 of the 2nd when Cody Payne beat Alex Dubeau.

- The Varsity Reds got all of the offense they would need within a 73 second span early in the 3rd period. Christopher Clapperton (Bennett) knotted the game at the 3:00 mark before Colin Suellentrop scored unassisted for what proved to be the game winning goal at 4:13.

- Dubeau played the first 40 minutes and stopped 9 out of 10 shots. Rylan Parenteau turned aside all 6 shots he saw in the 3rd period to pick up the victory.

- Shots were 31-16 for UNB with period totals of 8-3, 13-7, and 10-6.

- UNB went 0 for 5 on the power play. The Panthers were 0 for 3.

- UNB won 39 out of 65 face-offs. Kris Bennett won 13 of 20 while Dylan Willick was 9 of 15.

- Tyler Boland was in the line-up after Winnipeg released him from his amateur try-out (ATO) earlier the week. Hayden Hodgson (Columbus) and Mark Simpson (Washington) were both out as they have been invited to the main training camp of their respective teams.

- The V-Reds have now won 24 straight exhibition games against CIS competition.

- UNB's next action will be this Friday night at the AUC against the Dalhousie Tigers. This will be their only home pre-season game. Game time is 7PM.
