V-Reds Fall On The Island

A power play goal early in the 3rd period stood up as the eventual game winner as the UPEI Panthers upset the #1 ranked University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds 3-2 tonight in Charlottetown. UNB drops to 20-2-3 on the season and now sit one point behind the 20-1-4 St. FX X-Men, 4-1 winners over Acadia tonight.

- The Panthers struck first at 15:14 of the opening period before Chris Clapperton (Bennett, Anderson) responded with a power play marker at 18:03 to tie the game 1-1 after twenty minutes of play.

- Kris Bennett (Cooper, Simpson) gave UNB their only lead of the game at 9:25 of the 2nd period when he got the puck down low and made a move to get the puck around Panthers netminder Matt Mahalak.

- The Panthers tied the game at 12:52, taking advantage of a bad defensive zone turnover from the Varsity Reds which led to a 2-on-0 in tight.

-  A delay of game penalty in the first minute of the 3rd period put UPEI on the power play and they took full advantage with a fortuitous bounce off the rush leading to what ended up being the game winning goal at 1:39.

- Shots in the game were 27-24 for the Varsity Reds.

- Peter Trainor and Trey Lewis were out of the line-up with Oliver Cooper drawing back in.

- In the other game in what was a busy night around the conference, the Dalhousie Tigers rode a 46 save performance from Corbin Boes to pick up a big 4-2 win over Saint Mary's.

- UNB is back at it on Saturday night when they host Moncton. Game time is 7PM.
