University Cup Participants Finalized

The 8-team field for next week's University Cup - kicking off Thursday afternoon at the AUC - was finalized last night with the completion of the OUA bronze medal game and AUS consolation series.

In the OUA the Concordia Stingers defeated the York Lions 3-2 in Montreal to claim the conference's bronze medal and earn their first trip to the national tournament since 1984. Meanwhile, the Acadia Axemen raced out to a 4-0 lead after the 1st period and cruised to a 6-1 victory over Saint Mary's in the 3rd and deciding game of the AUS consolation final, capturing the conference's 3rd place berth at the expense of the Huskies for a second straight season.

These two teams will join the UNB Varsity Reds (AUS Champion), St. FX X-Men (AUS Finalist), Alberta Golden Bears (Canada West Champion), and Saskatchewan Huskies (Canada West Finalist) as teams who have their designation secured. The McGill Redmen and Brock Badgers will face off in the Queen's Cup tonight to determine the OUA Champion and runner-up.

Interestingly, six of the teams in this year's tournament are making return trips. The only new teams from last year are the Stingers and Badgers with only the Queen's Golden Gaels and York Lions failing to get back.

The tournament rankings and schedule are expected to be released Sunday.
