U Sports Top Ten (#1): Reds Top Inaugural Poll

U Sports released their first top ten rankings of the season yesterday and UNB has earned the top position in the initial poll.

It appears the rankings this year are going to be based on a combination of two separate metrics. As usual there is the media panel, of which UNB received 132 total points, including six first place votes. They also received 140 points from the ELO Rating System for a total of 272 points. This outpaced the defending University Cup champion Alberta Golden Bears, who earned a total of 245 points from 119 media points (five first votes) + 126 ELO points.

Rounding out the top ten are Saskatchewan (196), McGill (176), Saint Mary's (112 points, including the other three first place votes from the media), Concordia (100), St. FX (90), Guelph (71), Ottawa (56), and Brock (38).

As usual with the first rankings of a new season, a large number of teams received votes but not enough to crack the top ten. The honourable mentions include Ryerson (34), Mount Royal (33), Calgary (24), UBC (23), Moncton (19), Acadia (15), UQTR (15), Queen's (8), Lakehead (6), York (3), and Western (1).
